16. Italy’s Strongest Earthquake in 10 Years

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake just struck southern Italy – the strongest earthquake since 2016 for the country – struck at an incredible depth of 247 km. Just a few months prior, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck just to the north even deeper at 375 km below the surface! This sudden burst of M6.0+ seismicity after nearly 10 years of quiescence is unusual, and the depths speak to the changing plate tectonics under Italy involving the subduction of the African Plate under the Eurasian Plate.
